Beauty Report: Thanksgiving Today and Every Day

Beauty Report: Thanksgiving Today and Every Day

It is Thanksgiving Day. A day that openly invites us all to pay attention to the people, places and things that are most precious to us. It is a reminder that acknowledging gratitude sparkles us up and lets Beauty seep in.

And with that I introduce to you something that has been near and dear to me since my Forrest Yoga Training over 5 years ago: the the Beauty Report.

In Forrest Yoga, a beauty report is: “…when we see or experience something that dances in our heart. It is a way of having a new kind of communication with each other by sharing Beauty.”

It is a wonderful act to share Beauty with others, to spread gratitude and appreciation. To notice both the little things and the big things, to zoom in and to zoom out.

For me, there are many things to be thankful for today and every day. But putting them ‘out there’ has not been my natural comfort zone. I have toyed with the idea of writing a blog for multiple years but there has always been an excuse with fear lingering behind it. That fear is not totally gone, but at last I have dove in!

Let me back up for you a little and let you know a couple of tidbits about me.
*Starting is the challenging part for me. Following through to experience shifts, changes and results is usually not.
*Using words does not feel like my most natural means of communication. I much prefer actions, adornment, and the act of creating.

With those two tidbits in mind, it is easy for me to see why I have resisted writing a blog, even though I believed I had something to offer. The exciting news is that expressing myself in this new way has already begun to shift the dance in my heart (and this is only blog post #4)! This is my Beauty Report for today.

What dances in your heart?
Do you have a beauty report to recount? Leave it in the comment box or tell it to a loved on.
Better yet, do both!

Happy Thanksgiving!

The Studio

The Studio

Studios…where so much of the creation happens. I have had some great studios over the last 10 years since I graduated from RISD. Right at this very moment I am celebrating four years in my San Francisco studio. It is a wonderful place to spend so much time. High ceilings, diffused light, space to spread out (and less than a mile to various beaches!) I tend to take over every counter/bench top possible. Every once and a while I clean things up and the surfaces look like this: balboa st studio This particular studio has had various configurations. The image above is a shot from a couple of years ago. Below is a picture of it in early September before the day before I set up my two person exhibition Parallel Constellations with Amy Tavern (She is here in this picture. We were both finishing up the last little details before the show.) raissa bump amy tavern in balboa st studio But to give you a bit of perspective on it all, here are two pictures of my portion of the space: one before any of my stuff was moved in and one just weeks after arriving.

And a special thanks to my main companions in this adventure: Whitney dog (pictured below) and Jonathan Anzalone. And also Joseph Ferriso. Together these two guys make up Anzfer Farms with who the Balboa Street studio is shared.

Start with Something

Start with Something

As I am embark on this new endeavor to me–blogging–I am reminded of how I start many new projects. I find some way to feel that I am starting with something instead of nothing. Tapping in to what’s familiar–these things can be tangible or not. It is about ‘feeling’ like there is something that I already relate to or know deeply and this helps me to begin.

So yes, I may have never made a blog post before but I type on my computer often,  I take pictures of what I see around me, I have conversations and think about what I do. Now I will begin to share some of it with you. What to expect? Jewelry, Adornment, Inspiration, Knitwear, Stretches, Professional Practices, Yoga, Juggling, Why & What… There is much to unfold, but I imagine you following the threads of my interests. Interests that together make me want to get up in the morning and participate another day in my life. Interests that together under my umbrella revolve around that deep powerful thing we call Beauty.

Above is a brooch I made back in 2007. It was the beginning of a new relationship for me to the work that I made. It finally was feeling like me! If I never made this piece and a few others similar to it I don’t think I would be making jewelry today. Incorporating textile and color along with the metalwork opened up a door and I have never looked back.

Enjoy & Thanks!
